Labiaplasty Aftercare: Your Complete Guide to an Optimal Recovery

Labiaplasty Aftercare: Your Complete Guide to an Optimal Recovery

Labiaplasty — surgery to reshape the exterior of the vulva — is an increasingly popular procedure, with the number of women undergoing it increasing by more than 65% since 2013. Patients often report improved comfort during exercise, less irritation from clothing, and increased confidence following labiaplasty.

Opting for this corrective or aesthetic surgery is a personal and empowering decision. Whether you choose labiaplasty to improve comfort, reduce irritation, or enhance confidence, knowing how to care for yourself afterward helps promote optimal healing.

At Desert Hills Care Center, our board-certified OB/GYN, Dr. Helard Ballon-Hennings, MD, FACOG, and his team guide patients through each step of their recovery, ensuring they feel informed, supported, and confident throughout the process.

What to expect in the first few days

Your body starts healing immediately after labiaplasty, with the first several days usually bringing the most swelling and tenderness. This is completely normal.

We encourage patients to rest, stay hydrated, and apply cold compresses to reduce swelling. Short, gentle walks help improve circulation without straining the surgical area.

You may notice bruising, mild bleeding, or a clear discharge. These symptoms typically improve quickly as long as you keep the area clean and avoid friction.

We provide instructions for cleansing with warm water and a peri bottle (portable bidet), which helps you care for the area without rubbing or irritation.

Pain medication — either over-the-counter or prescribed — keeps discomfort manageable. Take it as directed rather than waiting for pain to build, because staying ahead of discomfort helps you move more easily and supports a better recovery.

How to care for the surgical area

Cleanliness plays a significant role in healing. Gently rinse the area with warm water after using the bathroom, then pat dry with a soft towel or allow the tissues to air dry. Avoid soaps, wipes, and scented products, as they can cause irritation.

Wearing loose cotton underwear and breathable clothing prevents friction and allows airflow. Tight clothes trap heat and moisture, which can slow healing. Changing your pad frequently (especially in the first week) helps you stay comfortable and reduces your risk of infection.

Most patients see swelling peak around day three or four, then gradually flatten over the next couple of weeks. Keeping the area cool, avoiding long periods of sitting, and propping yourself slightly with a pillow while reclining all help relieve pressure.

Activity restrictions

Your body needs time to heal after labiaplasty, so take things slowly. We typically recommend that you don’t use baths, pools, or hot tubs during early recovery, as these increase infection risk.

We also advise against heavy lifting for the first couple of weeks and strenuous exercise for about four weeks. Avoid sexual activity or tampon use for at least six weeks or until we confirm you’ve healed.

You can usually return to work within a few days if your job isn’t physically demanding. If your role requires lifting, bending, or long hours on your feet, you may need more time at home.

Listening to your body helps guide your activity level. If something pulls, stings, or increases swelling, scale back and rest.

Nutrition, hydration, and general wellness

Supporting your body from the inside helps healing progress smoothly. Drink plenty of water and eat foods rich in vitamins, protein, and healthy fats, which your body uses to repair tissue.

High-fiber foods and stool softeners reduce the risk of constipation, which is especially helpful in the first week when straining can cause labia discomfort.

Quality sleep also plays a major role in recovery. Give yourself permission to rest more than usual and avoid overscheduling commitments during the first week. Your body heals fastest when you slow down.

Typical symptoms vs. when to call us

Certain symptoms are normal during labiaplasty recovery, including swelling, mild bleeding, itching, and slight asymmetry as tissues settle. These issues usually improve with each passing week, but call us right away if you have:

These signs may indicate an infection or another problem that needs prompt attention. Complications following labiaplasty are rare, but call anytime you feel unsure.

Long-term healing and results

Most swelling fades over six to eight weeks, with final results typically evident around three to six months after surgery. Every healing journey is unique, and the tissue continues to soften and settle during this time. Our goal is to help you recover smoothly, feel supported, and enjoy the outcome you hoped for.
