Labiaplasty Q & A

What is labiaplasty?

The labia is the external part of a woman’s vulva and consists of the labia majora, which are the outer vaginal lips, and the labia minora, or the inner lips near your vaginal opening. Labia that are larger than normal or hang down can feel uncomfortable or cause embarrassment.

Labiaplasty with Dr. Ballon-Hennings and his team can reshape and improve the appearance of the labia minora to sit flush with the labia majora, helping to increase confidence and function.

Why might I need a labiaplasty?

You might choose labiaplasty with Dr. Ballon-Hennings for numerous reasons. Enlarged labia can occur because of:

  • Genetics
  • Sexual activity
  • Aging
  • Childbirth

Large or sagging labia might feel uncomfortable during exercise or sexual activity. They may increase your risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) or cause embarrassment when being intimate with your partner.

How should I prepare for surgery?

To get ready for labiaplasty, follow all your pre-surgery instructions. Stop taking medications if Dr. Ballon-Hennings recommends it, avoid food and drinks the morning of surgery if requested, and arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure.

What happens during a labiaplasty procedure?

When you arrive at Desert Hills Care Center for labiaplasty, your provider will apply local anesthesia to numb the treatment area. Once the area is numb, you won’t feel any pain.

During the procedure, Dr. Ballon-Hennings uses advanced surgical tools and procedures to remove excess labial tissue. He reshapes the remaining tissue to tighten it and improve its overall appearance. Dr. Ballon-Hennings may use stitches to close incisions before taking you to a recovery area to rest. Have a friend or family member drive you home.

What should I expect during my recovery?

Follow all post-surgical instructions after your labiaplasty. Get plenty of rest, take medications as directed by Dr. Ballon-Hennings, and avoid long showers during the healing process. Steer clear of running, cycling, other types of exercise, sexual intercourse, and tight clothing until he clears you for activity.

Don’t live with large or sagging labia that feel uncomfortable or make you self-conscious. Schedule an appointment with Desert Hills Care Center by phone or online to find out if labiaplasty is right for you.
