Robotic Surgery Q & A

What is robotic surgery?

Robotic surgery, also known as robot-assisted surgery, allows Dr. Ballon-Hennings and his team to complete numerous gynecological procedures with optimal accuracy. It’s a minimally invasive approach that offers less bleeding, a lower risk of complications, smaller incisions, and less recovery time than traditional open surgeries.

Why might I need robotic surgery?

Dr. Ballon-Hennings and his team might suggest robotic surgery if you have a gynecological condition, such as:

  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine, ovarian, or cervical cancer
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Pelvic pain
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Infertility
  • Other OB/GYN-related problems

They can complete a hysterectomy, endometriosis resection, myomectomy (fibroid removal), and other minimally invasive procedures to reduce your risk of complications.

To find out which type of robotic surgery, if any, is right for you, Dr. Ballon-Hennings and his team review your medical history and symptoms. They complete a pelvic examination and might recommend you undergo blood tests, ultrasound, or other imaging procedures.

How should I prepare for my procedure?

Follow all pre-procedure instructions prior to undergoing robotic surgery at Desert Hills Care Center. Stop taking certain medications as directed by Dr. Ballon-Hennings. Avoid eating or drinking anything the morning of your scheduled procedure and arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home afterward.

What should I expect during robotic surgery?

Prior to robotic surgery, the Desert Hills Care Center team gives you anesthesia so you don’t feel any pain. They use advanced robotic technology to make tiny incisions and repair or remove tissues within your pelvic area. After closing the incisions, Dr. Ballon-Hennings and his team take you to a recovery area. You might stay a night or two in a surgery center.

What happens after my treatment?

After robotic surgery, have someone drive you home and assist you during your recovery. Take medications as prescribed, get plenty of rest, and avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting until Dr. Ballon-Hennings clears you for activity.

Depending on the type of procedure you undergo, you may experience some vaginal bleeding while you heal. Call the Desert Hills Care Center office if you notice new or worsening symptoms. The length of time it takes to recover from robotic surgery depends on the type of procedure you undergo.

If you require gynecological surgery because of heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, infertility, or other OB/GYN-related problems, you can trust the Desert Hills Care Center team with your care. Book an appointment by phone or online today to find out if robotic surgery is right for you.
